The Law of god … His 10 Comandments

I am currently reading the Life Application Study Bible. This is the bible, but contains textual footnotes adding further clarity and explanation of each passage in the holy book. Currently, I am on Genesis, but was sidetracked in thinking about the 10 Commmandments.

Below is a comparison of the 10 Commandments from God and Jesus. It’s interesting to learn these from an Old and New testament comparison.

After you’ve read the comparison, what are your thoughts on how Jesus reworded the Law of God to so we can understand them with better clarity?

God says…

Jesus says…

  1. You must not have any other God but me. – Exodus 20:4
  2. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind. Exodus 20:4
  3. Your must not misuse the name of the LORD YOUR GOD. Exodus 20:7
  4. Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Exodus 20:8
  5. Honor your father and mother. Exodus 20:12
  6. You must not murder. Exodus 20:13
  7. You must not commit adultery. Exodus 20:14
  8. You must not steal. Exodus 20:15
  9. You must not testisfy falsely against your neighbor. Exodus 20:16
  10. You must not covet. Exodus 20:17
  1. You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him. Matthew 4:10
  2. No one can serve two masters. Luke 16:13
  3. Do not make any vows! Do not say, “By the Heaven!” because heaven is God’s throne. Matthew 5:34
  4. The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath. Mark 2:27-28
  5. If you love your father and mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine. Matthew 10:37
  6. If you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgement! Matthew 5:22
  7. Anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Matthew 5:28
  8. If you are sued in court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat too. Matthew 5:40
  9. You must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. Matthew 12:36
  10. Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Luke 12:15

The first 4 commandments show us how to relate to God.

The next 6 commandments show us how to treat other people. The prohibitions against murder, adultery, and stealing require us to respect the life, personhood, possessions, and integrity of others. These are hallmarks for how God wants us to live today.

SABBATH DAY… A FURTHER LOOK

According to the bible, the Sabbath day is the day before the first day of the week. In todays modern society, Saturday is the seventh day of the week. There is no clear evidence in the New Testament that the Sabbath was changed to Sunday.

So, what happened? According to a summarization from: Wikipedia, Tommorrowsworld and BecomingChristians websites: Constantine the Great, roman emporer in 321 AD enacted a civil law stating Sunday is the day of rest. This was to be the day of worship for the Roman Empire. Moving ahead to the fourth century, the Catholic Council of Laodicea affirmed Sunday worship and declared Christian Sabbath-keepers heretics. Christianity that Contantine upheld didn’t want to have anthing that is considered Jewish, so they chose Sunday as the new Sabbath Day.

Have a blessed Day my brothers and sisters. I would love to hear your thoughts on this, so please leave your comments below.
